Abstract
The study was conducted to answer the following questions. (1) are the twelfth grade students of SMA Negeri 2 Kupang in the school year 2019/2020 able to construct conditional sentence type III? (2) what is the ability level of the twelfth grade students of SMA Negeri 2 Kupang in the school year 2019/2020 in using conditional sentence type III? The objectives of the study are (1) to find out whether the twelfth grade students of SMA Negeri 2 Kupang in the school year 2019/2020 able to construct conditional sentence type III or not. (2) to find out the level of ability of the twelfth grade students of SMA Negeri 2 Kupang in the school year 2019/2020 in using conditional sentence type III. To answer the questions mentioned above the writer used the quantitative-qualitative method. The aim was to explain the data obtained from this research by using words and numbers. The result of the study shows the following facts. (1) the twelfth grade students of SMA Negeri 2 Kupang in the school year 2019/2020 are able to construct the conditional sentence type III (2) their ability level is “Fairly Good” with a total score of 67.8%. Their ability level is as follows: 2 students got excellent level of ability ranging from 91-100, 8 students got very good level of ability ranging from 81-90, 4 students got good level of ability ranging from 71-80, 4 students got fairly good level of ability ranging from 61-70, 5 students got average level of ability ranging from 51-60, 3 students got below average level of ability ranging from 41-50, 4 students got poor level of ability ranging from 31-40. Moreover, based on the result of the analysis, the writer would like to offer some suggestions: (1) the writer is motivated to study hard grammar, especially the tenses and try to get better way of how to solve their problems in using conditional sentence type III (2) the English teacher should improve the students’ ability in understanding conditional sentence type III and they also should help them to master vocabulary and grammar which can help them able to construct conditional sentence type III. (3) the writer suggests that the students should study more about vocabulary and grammar (especially past perfect tense).
