Abstract
This study is a qualitative research that aims to describe the difficulties of students in solving story problems for students of SMP Adhyaksa 2 Kupang in the 2020/2021 academic year on algebraic material. The subjects in this study consisted of three students who were selected based on high, medium, and low test scores. Research subjects were also selected according to the results of discussions between mathematics teachers and researchers. Collecting data in the form of test results and interview results based on indicators of difficulty in solving questions. Data analysis includes data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. Checking the validity of the data using time triangulation. The results of data exposure and analysis concluded that (1) subjects with high abilities had no difficulty in using concepts, applying principles and solving verbal problems. (2) The subject is able to use the concept, but the subject is less able to apply the principle, so that in solving verbal problems, the subject is less thorough. (3) While the low subject has not been able so that they still have difficulty in using concepts, applying principles and solving verbal problems.
