Abstract

This study was aimed to identify the types of errors made by the fourth semester of English education study program students in a private university in Kupang in writing recount text. The research questions are (1) what are the types of grammatical errors and (2) what is the most common type of grammatical error committed by English education study program. The research objectives are (1) to find out the types of grammatical error (2) To find out the most common error. The type of this research was descriptive qualitative research. The participants of the study were 21 students of English education study program. The data was collected through task of writing with their own topics chosen. This study focused on error analysis using linguistic category taxonomy which is syntactical and morphological. The result showed that (1) the type of syntactical error is 149 errors (53,60%) consisting of 6 types, those are the use of pronoun (79,40%), Adjective (0,67%), Preposition (7,38%), Conjunction (8,05%), verb phrase (63,76%), Sentence Construction (10,74%). (2) The type of morphological error is 129 errors (46,40%) consisting of 6 types, those are article (7,75%), the use of regular verb (26,36%), the use of irregular verb (32,56%), Tense (13,18%), plural marker (4,65%), Possessive (15,50%). It is clearly seen that the most common error is syntactical errors (53,60%) especially the verb phrase. It is 63,76%. From the result, the students are suggested to learn more about grammar of verb phrase, tenses, irregular and regular verb, pronoun, conjunction, preposition, suffix, possessives, plural marker and article.
