Abstract

It was conducted to answer the following questions; (1) Are the eleventh grade students of SMAKN 3 Kupang in the school year 2020/2021 able to use active and passive voices in present and past tenses? (2) What is the ability level of the eleventh grade students of SMAKN 3 Kupang in the school year 2020/2021 in using active and passive voices in present and past tenses? The objectives of the study are the following. (1) To investigate whether or not the students of SMAKN 3 Kupang in the school year 2020/2021 are able to understand active and passive sentences (2) To investigate the eleventh grade students’ ability level of SMAKN 3 Kupang in the school year 2020/2021 in using active and passive sentences. The method used in this study was descriptive research. The aim of this method is to give or explain a situation which is observed while the research is done. The subject of the study was the eleventh grade students of SMAKN3 Kupang (Class XII). The total number of the students of class XII was 30 as the sample of this study. The instrument used in this study was a test on active and passive sentences. The test consisted of 50 test items of multiple choices and the test items of essay test. The result of this study shows that the eleventh grade students of SMAKN3 Kupang are not able to use active and passive voices. The ability level of the students in using active and passive voiceswas “VERY POOR” (2,49%). There is no student who gets 9.6-10 (Excellent), there are 8 students who get (26,6%) 1.6-2.5 (Bad). There are 3 students who get (10%) 0-1.5 (Very Bad). There is no students who gets8.6-9.5 (Very good). There is no student who gets7.6-8.5 (Good). There is no students who gets 6.6-7.5 (Fairly Good). There is 1 students (3.33%) who get the score 5.6-6.5 (Average). There is no students who gets 4.6-5.5 (Below Average). There are 4 students (13,3%) who get 3.6-4.5 (Poor). There are 14 students (46,6%) who get the score of 2.6-3.5 (Very Poor). Based on the result of the study, the writer suggest: (1) For the English teacher, the result of the data analysis can give valuable contribution and the English teacher’s consideration for the next teaching and learning process. Such as by asking students not to depend on using active sentences dominantly because it will be better if an active sentence and a passive sentence are combined and also using games and conversations as a learning method.It can help students to be able in using active and passive voices. (2) For the students, based on the result of the study, students can be motived to study more about English, especially in using active and passive voices and the students should learn more about grammar and vocabulary that can help them to be able to use active and passive voices.
