Abstract
This research aimed to describe: 1) mathematical reasoning of students with high mathematical ability in Junior High School on constructing the understanding of algebra factorization; 2) mathematical reasoning of students with moderate mathematical ability in Junior High School on constructing the understanding of algebra factorization; 3) mathematical reasoning of students with low mathematical ability in Junior High School on constructing the understanding of algebra factorization. This research was descriptive qualitative research. The research subjects were taken from eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 2 Kupang semester 2 academic year 2015/2016. The procedure for taking the subjects used purposive sampling technique. The subject amounted to 3 students consisting of one student for each mathematical ability category. The research data were the mathematical reasoning of students on constructing the understanding of algebra factorization. The data were obtained from the process of completion the problem based task doing by students. The research instrument were the researcher as main instrument and the problem based task as supporting instrument. For collecting the data, researcher used many instructions by the problem based task, involving the interview, for directing the subjects on constructing constructing the understanding of algebra factorization by constructing many algebra blocks. The techniques of analyzing the data were: (a) data reduction (b) presention of data (c) conclusion. The result showed that: 1) the student with high mathematical ability were able to understand the task given, able to make strategy and implementing the steps to resolv on constructing and forming the square, able to construct the understanding of algebra factorization; 2) the student with moderate mathematical ability were able to understand the task given, able to make strategy and implementing the steps on constructing and forming the square, able to construct the understanding of algebra factorization. Even though on constructing the understanding of algebra factorization, student needed more diretion of researcher; 3) the student with low mathematical ability were able to understand the task given, able to make strategy and implementing the steps on constructing and forming the rectangle with any direction of researcher, but student confused and needed more direction of researcher on constructing the understanding of algebra factorization. Finally, students were not able to reveal by her own words the understanding of algebra factorization.
