Abstract

This research entitled “An Analysis of Junior high Students’ Ability in Writing Descriptive Text in The Academic Year 2021”. The purpose of this study was (1) to find the ability level in writing descriptive text (2) to find out the difficulties faced by students’ seven grade of SMP Negeri 11 Kupang in writing descriptive text. The subject of this study was the 11 students’ of VII-J class. The research investigated on the descriptive writing text which had been done by the seven grade students of SMP Negeri 11 Kupang.The sample of this research is 11 students who are in class VII J. The data was collected through a writing test by describing the picture. This research used descriptive qualitative research to design the data. The researcher analyzed the students’ writing result referring to the five aspects. They were organization idea, developing idea, grammar, vocabulary, and mechanics. This study was not only aimed at investigating the students’ writing ability, but it was also aimed at finding out the students’ strength and weakness which would be classified into five levels of classifications: Excellent, very good, good, average, bellow average, and bad. The result of the test showed that the students’ ability in writing descriptive text was average (12.00). The difficulties faced by students’ in the descriptive text were grammar, vocabulary and mechanic where they had limit knowledge about grammar vocabulary. They only knew the general vocabulary such as subject, color and so on. The lack of knowledge caused another problem of meaning. In vocabulary aspect, the students’ had no idea on how to describe the object; it took much time to write a simple paragraph during the test. To sum up, the students’ had several problems in writing a descriptive text. Their problems were generating ideas, vocabulary, grammar and mechanic. Thus, it is suggested to students’ to enrich vocabulary so that they could write descriptive well.
