Abstract

This research is entitled "Study on Writing Ability of EFL Students". The aims of this study were (1) to find out whether fourth semester students of English education study program at Unwira could write descriptive texts and (2) to determine the level of ability of fourth semester students of English education study program at Unwira to write descriptive texts. The subjects of this study were 12 students in the fourth semester of the UNWIRA English education study program. This study examines descriptive written texts that have been carried out by 4th semester students of the English study program UNWIRA Kupang. The sample of this study was 12 students in semester 4. The data was collected through a writing test by describing an object according to their respective topics. This study uses descriptive qualitative research to design the data. Researchers analyzed the results of student writing that refers to these three aspects. They are vocabulary, grammar and mechanics. This study not only aims to determine students' writing abilities, but also aims to determine the strengths and weaknesses of students who will be classified into five levels of classification: Very good, very good, good, average, below average, and poor. The test results show that the average student's ability to write descriptive texts is still not good. The difficulties faced by students in descriptive texts are grammar, vocabulary and mechanical where they have limited knowledge of grammar vocabulary. They only know general vocabulary like subject, color and so on. Lack of knowledge causes another meaning problem. In the vocabulary aspect, students do not know how to describe objects, it takes a lot of time to write simple paragraphs during the test. In short, students have some problems in writing descriptive text. Their problems are generating ideas, vocabulary, grammar and mechanics. Therefore, it is suggested to students to enrich their vocabulary so that they can write descriptively well.
