Abstract

This study is entitled” The Effectiveness of Using Video in Teaching Vocbulary to the Eeighth Grade Students of SMP Negeri 8 Kupang in the Academic Year 2014/2015”. The study is conducted to answer the questions; “ Is the teaching of vocabulary especially verb using video effective to improve the vocabulary stock especially in verb of the eighth grade students of SMPN 8 Kupang in the academic year 2014/2015?”. The study is conducted in order to find out whether the use of video as a media can improve the vocabulary stock of verb of the eighth grade students of SMPN 8 Kupang in the academic year 2014/2015. The writer conducted this classroom action research which covers four steps, namely; planning, acting, observing and reflecting (Kemmis and Taggart in Wiraatmaja 2006:66). This study was conducted at the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 8 Kupang in the academic year 2014/2015. In this study, the writer choose the class VIII J. The total students of class VIII J was 27 students as the respondents. The instruments used to compile the data were Test, Observation Sheet, and Questionnaire. The data required for this study were collected by administering pre-test in finding the verbs vocabulary, reflection by the end of each cycle I and cycle II and administering questionnaire by the end of cycle II. The result of pre-test was 39,6 which was classified “below average”. To solve this problem of students’ stock vocabulary needed to be improved through video as a teaching media. The result of the study showed that; 1. Teaching vocabulary by using video is effective to improve the student’s verbs vocabulary. It is determined by the score in every cycle went up (79.6 for cycle I and 91,48 for cycle II. The grand mean score in cycle I and cycle II showed the improvement of the students’ stock of verbs vocabulary after being taught using video. The result data of questionnaire also indicated that most of students like the use of video. Stock of verbs vocabularyof the eleventh grade students of SMP Negeri 8 Kupang could be improved after being taught using video, was proved. This media of video could resolve the students‟ problem in finding the verbs vocabulary, based on the finding of this Classroom Action Research Study, it could be concluded that teaching vocabulary by using video was effective to improve the student’scomprehension of vocabulary. So the researcher suggests to the English teacher and students of SMP Negeri 8 Kupang to use video continuously in teaching and learning process especially teaching verbs vocabulary. Realizing the importance of video as a teaching media the teachers are expected to apply it in another skill of English either written or spoken in teaching and learning process.
