Abstract

This study is entitled: “The Effectiveness of Using Crossword Puzzle in Teaching Simple Past Tense to the Eleventh Grade Students of SMA Negeri 7 Kupang in the School Year 2014/2015”. It aims at answering the questions as stated in the following 1) Is using crossword puzzle effective in teaching simple past tense to the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 7 Kupang? The objectives of this study is 1) To find out the effectiveness of using crossword puzzle in teaching simple past tense to the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 7 Kupang. To support the problem statements, some books that are related to this study were used in order to support this writing in terms of ideas and general knowledge concerning the study as a whole. The subject of the study was the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 7 Kupang in the school year 2014/2015. However, by using purposive sampling the writer only chose the students of lnguage class. There were 30 students of language class who became the respondents of the study. The method applied in this study was descriptive method. The instrument of the study was pre-test and post-test. The result of the study shows that the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 7 Kupang in the school year 2014/2015 in using Crossword Puzzle in Teaching Simple Past Tense is effective. It is showed by the sum of deviation score of post-test and the sum of deviation of pre-test which (92.66 > 59.0). From the observation result it is also showed that the teaching learning process in which crossword puzzle media was implied ran well. The situation during the teaching learning process was conducive, lively, and active. Based on the result of the study, there are some suggestions which need to be considered: (1) The English teacher should give more explanation and exercises about the use of regular and irregular past form of verb so they can use the regular and irregular in the sentence. (2) Students should be always motivated to learn structure because it is one of the basic elements of the language for constructing sentence.
