Abstract

This study is entitled: A STUDY ON THE ABILITY IN ORAL PRESENTATION OF EIGHTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMPK SANCTA FAMILIA KUPANG IN THE SCHOOL YEAR 2014/2015. The study is conducted to answer the following questions: (1) Are the eighth grade students’ of SMPK Sancta Familia Kupang able to do Oral Presentation in English? (2) What is the ability of the eighth grade students of SMPK Sancta Familia Kupang in doing the Oral Presentation? (3) What might be the difficulties faced by the eighth grade students of SMPK Sancta Familia Kupang in doing Oral Presentation? The study was conducted in order to find out whether the eighth grade students of SMPK Sancta Familia are able to do the Oral Presentation in English, to find out what is the level ability of the eighth grade students of SMPK Sancta Familia Kupang in doing Oral Presentation and to find out the most difficulties encountered by the eighth grade students of SMPK Sancta Familia Kupang.. This study is limited in six aspects of speaking as proposed by the writer herself in terms of content, unity, coherence, delivery, grammar, and vocabulary. In obtaining the data, the writer used descriptive qualitative method. Actually there are 65 students in the eighth grade and the writer chose 20 students randomly, based on their attendance list. The instrument used in this study was Oral Presentation test. Based on the analysis of data, the writer concludes that (1) not all of the eighth grade students of SMPK Sancta Familia Kupang are able to do the Oral presentation, only 14 or 70% students passed while the 6 or 30% students fail, (2) the ability of the eighth grade students in SMPK Sancta Familia is in below average (59.42) level. It means students still need to practice a lot in order to be able to do well oral presentation, and (3) almost of the students are find difficult in coherence and vocabulary aspect. Students shows that they cannot develop their ideas in logical, it means they didn’t relate their statements to each other. Their vocabulary range is too limited, they frequently use incorrect grammar and also hard to pronounce the words correctly. Based on the result of the study the writer would like to propose some suggestions as follows: 1) The teacher: all the teachers should consider that teaching student to be able to do the oral presentation is important nowadays. The practice should be focused in coherence and vocabulary aspect. Students needs to teach how to develop their ideas in logical, it means they have to relate their statements to each other. Their vocabulary range is too limited, they frequently use incorrectly grammar and also hard to pronounce the words correctly. The students need to be able in pronouncing the words, using grammar especially in tenses verb, noun, conjunction, possessive pronoun, adjective, preposition, and article and update the comprehension in English vocabulary. and 2)The students: students should learn and practice a in order to do Oral Presentation especially in English, focusing focusing on the coherence and vocabulary aspects, such as: make a paragraph and make it logically. The students’ needs to be able to pronounce the words, using grammar especially in tenses verb, noun, conjunction, possessive pronoun, adjective, preposition, and function meaning of vocabulary.
