Abstract

Error in Using Simple Past tense in Writing Narrative Text of eleventh Grade Students of SMAN 1Weluli.This research aimed to find out the kinds of error on the use of simple past tense in narrative text and dominant error made by Eleventh Grade students of SMAN 1 Weluli. The method of this research was qualitative research. The population of this research was eleventh grade students of SMAN 1 Weluli. The sample consisted of 30 students taken from science class of eleventh grade students of SMAN 1 Weluli in Academic Year 2021/2022. The data were collected through the students’ written test of narrative text. The findings of this research indicated that there were 149 total error that students made which were classified into four categories based on the surface strategy taxonomy. Those were error of omission with 34 errors, error of addition with 10 errors, misformation with 101 errors and misordering with 4 errors. The dominant error made by student is in misformation category. From the percentage result, it can be seen where misformation were 67,78%, then followed by error of omission with 22,82%, error of addition with 6,71% and misordering with 2,69%. Based on the findings, it can be concluded that eleventh grade students of SMAN 1 Weluli had many errors in writing narrative text especially in using simple past tense. Misformation is dominant error that occurs where the causes is come from intralingual transfer with its term which areovergeneralization; ignorance of rule restrictions; incomplete application of the rules;and false concept hypothesized. The students need more practice in using simple past tense in order to make them familiar with it and they can compose a good narrative text.
