Abstract

This study is entitled: “A STUDY ON THE ABILITY TO WRITE SUMMARY OF A READING TEXT OF THE EIGHTH SEMESTER STUDENTS OF THE ENGLISH STUDY PROGRAM OF WIDYA MANDIRA CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY KUPANG IN THE ACADEMIC YEAR 2014/2015”.This study was conducted in order to answer the following questions: (1) Are the eighth semester students of the English Department of Widya Mandira Catholic University able to write a summary after reading text? (2) What is their level of ability? To answer accurately the problems above, normative survey method was employed in this research to describe students‟ ability to write a summary. In order to support this research, the writer used some books that are related to the core of this writing. The subject of this study was the eighth semester students of English Education Study Program of Widya Mandira Catholic University Kupang. The total number of them was 10 students. The instrument used for this research was essay-writing test that focused on summary writing. The data collected were analyzed on each aspect of writing, namely; grammar, vocabulary, mechanics, fluency, and form. The result of this study indicated that three students got score 26-30 (excellent) or 30% and seven students who get score 21-25 (very good) or 70%. It means that there is no student who get score 16-20 (good), 11-15 (average), 6-10 (below average), and 5 (bad). Based on the result of this study, the writer concluded that the eighth semester students of English Study Program of Widya MAndira Catholic University Kupang are able to write a summary of a reading text. Their level of ability is classified as “Very Good”. Although students level of ability in writing a summary based on reading text is already “Very Good” the English teachers particularly the English teachers of writing should emphasize and drill the students concerning the use of correct grammar, vocabulary, punctuation, spelling, capitalization, beside the coherence and unity in organizing a piece of writing task.
