Abstract

This study is entitled “A STUDY ON THE READING COMPREHENSION ABILITY OF SPOOF TEXT OF THE ELEVENTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMA NEGERI 7 KUPANG IN THE ACADEMIC YEAR 2015/2016. It was done to answer the following questions: (1) are the students of the Eleventh Grade of SMAN 7 Kupang in the Academic Year 2015/2016 able to comprehended the Spoof Text they read?, (2) what is the ability level of the Eleventh Grade Students of SMA Negeri 7 Kupang in the Academic Year 2015/2016 in reading comprehension? The study was done for the following objectives: (1) to know whether or not the eleventh grade students of SMAN 7 Kupang in the academic year 2015/2016 able to comprehended the spoof text they read , (2) to know the ability level of spoof text of the eleventh grade students of SMAN 7 Kupang in the academic year 2015/2016 in reading comprehension. The writer limited this study on Literal Comprehension questions. The “Descriptive Method” was used in this study, and the writer used “Test” as instrument. It consisted of 4 reading texts (stories) entitled “A Police and Whistle”, “Private Conversation”, “Fluffy Bunny Rabbir”, and “Pinguin in the Park” followed by 20 test items of multiple choice test as the instrument. To gather the data, the writer chose the Eleventh Grade Students of SMA Negeri 7 Kupang in the academic year 2015/2016 as the subject of the study. The writer chose class XI Science program especially class A as sample of the study. The subject of the study consist of 31 students but there were only 20 students joined the test. The result of this study showed that : (1) The students of the eleventh grade of SMA Negeri 7 Kupang in the Academic Year 2015/2016 are able to comprehend spoof texts they have read. (2) The ability level of reading comprehension of the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 7 Kupang in the Academic Year 2015/2016 was good. Based on the student’s level of ability in multiple choice test there are, 9 students (45%) have very good level of ability, 4 students (20%) have good level of ability, 7 students (35%) have fairly good level of ability. The result of the study showed that the Eleventh Grade students of SMA Negeri 7 Kupang in the Academic Year 2015/2016 were able to comprehend reading text they read. Their level of ability was “good”. It was based on their average of grade in answering the test. It was 8.125 (81.25%). However, they often answered some certain items of the test incorrectly because their vocabulary was limited and they did not understand well about generic structure of spoof text. Therefore, the writer suggests the English teachers of SMA Negeri 7 Kupang to give more practices to the students to comprehend reading text by providing various spoof texts that should be comprehended by the students. The teachers should help them to master vocabulary and generic structure of spoof text and help them to master tenses especially simple past tense and its use in sentences.
