Abstract
This study was conducted to answer the following questions: (1) Are the eighth students of SMPK St. Theresia Kupang in the school year 2012/2013 able to use the preposition of place and time in English sentences or not? (2) What is the ability level of the eighth grade students of SMPK St. Theresia Kupang in the school year 2012/2013 in using the preposition of place and time? (3) What are the areas of difficulties that might be faced by the students in using preposition of place and time? The objectives of the study are: (1) To know the ability of the eighth grade students of SMPK St. Theresia Kupang in the school year 2012/2013 in using preposition of place and time in English sentence. (2) To know the students‟ levels of ability in using preposition of place and time in English sentence. (3) To find out the areas of difficulties that might be faced by the students in using preposition of place and time. In this study the writer used normative survey method because the ability level of the students in using preposition of place and time is obtained through correction and quantification of the data in form of answer sheets of the students. The study was conducted in SMPK St. Theresia Kupang. The instrument used in getting the data was a test consisting of multiple choice tests, and sentence completion with the total number of test items was 40. The result of the study shows that (1) The eighth grade students of SMPK St. Theresia Kupang in the school year 2012/2013 are able to use the preposition of place and time (2) The level ability of the students in using preposition of place and time is 7.20 which is classified as fairly good (3). The difficulties faced by the eighth grade students of SMPK St. Theresia Kupang in using preposition of place and time were how to use preposition in as preposition of place and how to use preposition on as preposition of time. Based on the result of the study, the writer would like to give some suggestion for the English teacher and the students in researched school, (1) For the English teacher: in order to maintain and increase the students‟ ability in using the preposition of place and time the teacher should give the student explanations and practices more about how to use prepositions in sentences until they master. (2) The students should do more exercises about the use of preposition in sentences
