Abstract

This study is entitled ” A STUDY ON GRAMMATICAL ERRORS IN WRITING ANALYTICAL EXPOSITION TEXT OF THE ELEVENTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMAN 3 KUPANG IN THE SCHOOL YEAR 2018/2019”. It was conducted in order to answer the following questions (1) What are the types of grammatical errors in writing analytical exposition text produced by the eleventh grade students of SMAN 3 Kupang in school year 2018/2019? (2) What are the most common grammatical errors in writing analytical exposition text produced by the eleventh grade students of SMAN 3 Kupang in school year 2018/2019? While the objectives of the study are to find out the types of grammatical errors in writing analytical exposition text produced by the eleventh grade students of SMAN 3 Kupang in school year 2018/2019 and to find out the most common grammatical errors in writing analytical exposition text produced by the eleventh grade students of SMAN 3 Kupang in school year 2018/2019. In collecting the data, the writer uses written data taken place in SMAN 3 Kupang of the eleventh grade students especially MIPA Class 4, 6, 7, and 9. The writer chose 30 students randomly and asked them to write an analytical exposition text from the topics given by the writer. There were three topics, they are full day school, using smartphone in class and online shopping. The result of the study showed that (1) the grammatical errors in writing analytical exposition text produced by the eleventh grade students of SMAN 3 Kupang in school year 2018/2019 were omission, addition, misformation and misordering. (2) The most common grammatical error in writing analytical exposition text produced by the eleventh grade students of SMAN 3 Kupang in school year 2018/2019 was misformation error with the total errors 87 (61,7%) from the total number of errors 141. Based on the result of data analysis, the writer would like to propose some suggestions to the English teachers of SMAN 3 Kupang; (1) The teacher should allocate more time to teach the students about basic English grammar and vocabulary besides improving their skill in listening, speaking, reading and writing. (2) If it is possible, the teacher gives the students more drills to deepen their basic English grammar every day because the students are still confused to construct a good sentence in English. And for the students of SMAN 3 Kupang it is suggested to learn more the basic English grammar because it is a basic knowledge before having skill in listening, speaking, reading and writing in English.
