Abstract

This thesis is entitled “AN ANALYSIS ON GRAMMATICAL ERRORS IN RECOUNT TEXT WRITTEN BY THE EIGHTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMPK ST. THERESIA KUPANG IN THE SCHOOL YEAR 2018/2019”. It was conducted to answer the following questions: (1)What kinds of grammatical errors committed by the eighth grade students of SMPK St. Theresia Kupang in the school year 2018/2019 in writing recount text? (2)What is the most common type of grammatical errors committed by the eighth grade students of SMPK St. Theresia Kupang in the school year 2018/2019 in writing recount text? The objectives of the study were: (1)To find out the kinds of grammatical errors committed by the eighth grade students of SMPK St. Theresia Kupang in the school year 2018/2019 in writing recount text. (2)To find out the most common type of grammatical errors committed by the eighth grade students of SMPK St. Theresia Kupang in the school year 2018/2019 in writing recount text. This study used descriptive method to classify and analyze the students’ grammatical errors. The subject of this study was the eighth grade students from class B. The total number of the students was 28 and the writer intended to have all the students to be the respondents of the study but there were three students who did not come due to the health problem. Finally, the writer only had 25 students as the respondents of this study. In collecting the needed data, the writer used writing test as the instrument. In 80 minutes, the students were asked to compose a recount text in 3 paragraphs and the writer offered 4 topics. The topics were: an embarrassing moment, first day of school, a time I was scared and students’ own topic. The result of the research showed that (1) The kinds of grammatical errors committed by the eighth grade students of SMPK St. Theresia Kupang were misformation 90 (69%), omission 29 (22%) addition 8 (6%) and misordering 3 (2%). (2) The most common type of grammatical errors committed by the eighth grade students of SMPK St. Theresia Kupang was misformation 90 (69%). Based on the result of this study, the writer would like to offer some suggestions as follows: (1) The students must learn more about grammar especially regarding the grammatical aspects such as the use of simple past tense, verbs, nouns, adjectives, adverbs, to infinitive, preposition and articles. (2) The teacher must pay more attention to the grammatical aspects especially when it comes to teach recount text.
