Abstract

This study is entitled “A STUDY ON READING COMPREHENSION ABILITY OF THE TENTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMKN 2 KUPANG IN THE SCHOOL YEAR 2018/2019”. This study was conducted to answer the following questions: (1) Are the tenth grade students of SMKN 2 Kupang able to comprehend the reading text? (2) What are the comprehension leves of tenth grade students of SMKN 2 Kupang in comprehending the reading text? (3) What are the difficulties encountered by tenth grade students of SMKN 2 Kupang in comprehending reading text? While the objectives of the study are (1) To find out, are the tenth grade students of SMKN 2 Kupang able to comprehend reading text. (2) To identify comprehension levels of students in comprehending reading ext. (3) To find out the difficulties faced by the students in comprehending the reading text. This study was conducted by using five narrative texts and test multiple choice test of twenty-five items. The subject of this study was the tenth grade students of SMKN 2 Kupang in the school year 2018/2019 exactly in computer and network engineering class. The result of the studys hows that (1) The tenth grade students of SMKN 2 Kupang are not able to comprehend the reading text, their ability evelis “Bad” on the average level of 22.56%. (2) The students’ comprehension level sin comprehending reading text are level I (Literal) and level II (Inferential). (3) The difficulties faced by the tenth grade students of SMKN 2 Kupang in comprehending reading text are that the students vocabulary is weak, and their sentence structures are also bad, and motivations of students is very low to learn English Language. They just focus on their technical vocational subjects. By looking at the result obtained, the writer suggests to: The first, the English teacher should give more practice or tests for the students about reading, so that the students can improve their ability in comprehending reading texts. The second, the students are suggested to do more practice and exercises about reading texts in classroom or at home, So that their level ability on reading comprehension can be better.
