Abstract
This study is entitled “A STUDY ON GRAMMATICAL ERRORS IN TRANSLATION OF NARRATIVE TEXT FROM INDONESIAN INTO ENGLISH OF THE EIGHTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMP SANTA THERESIA KUPANG IN THE SCHOOL YEAR 2018/2019” It aims at answering the following questions. 1) What are kinds of grammatical errors made by the eighth grade students of SMP Santa Theresia Kupang in translating narrative text? 2) What are the most grammatical errors done by the eighth grade students of SMP Santa Theresia Kupang in translating narrative text? The objectives of the study are as follows: 1) To find out kinds of grammatical errors made by the eighth grade students of SMP Santa Theresia Kupang in translating narrative text. 2) To find out the most grammatical errors made by the eighth grade students of SMP Santa Theresia Kupang in translating narrative text. The method applied in this study was descriptive method and the instrument used was the translation test. The writer prepares an Indonesian narrative text with the tittle ‘Anjing dan Kucing’, and asked the students to translate it into English. The time allocation was 40 minutes. There were 24 students from grade VIII as the sample of the study. The result of the analysis shows (1) The grammartical errors that committed by the eighth grade students of SMP Santa Theresia Kupang are, misformation (38.79%), misordering (2,58%), omission (36.63%), and addition (22%). The total number of error is 232. (2) The most frequent error is misformation with the total of errors is 38,79%. The grammatical errors commite by the students involved tenses, verb, noun, conjunction, possessive pronoun, adjective, preposition and article. Seeing the result of the study, the suggestions are given (1) The Teacher should teach the students how to translate the text and give the students chance to practice. The practices should be focused on grammar especially in using tenses verb, noun, conjunction, possessive pronoun, adjective, preposition and article and update the comprehension in English vocabulary. (2)The students should learn how to translate the test focusing on grammar especially in using tenses verb, noun, conjunction, possessive pronoun, adjective, preposition and article and function meaning of vocabulary
