Abstract

This study is entitled “A Study on the Ability in Translating a Recount Text From Indonesian Language into English of the Tenth Grade Students of SMAK Saint Carolus Kupang in the School Year 2018/2019”. The study was conducted to answer the following questions. (1) Is the translation done by the tenth grade students of SMAK Saint Carolus Kupang in the school year 2018/2019 good or bad? (2) What are the difficulties faced by the tenth grade students of SMAK Saint Carolus Kupang in translating a recount text from Indonesian language into English? The objectives of the study are (1) To find out whether the translation done by the tenth grade students of SMAK Saint Carolus Kupang is good or bad translation. (2) To find out difficulties faced by the tenth grade students of SMAK Saint Carolus Kupang in translating a recount text from Indonesian language into English. The method applied in this study was descriptive Method. The subject of the study was tenth grade students of SMAK Saint Carolus Kupang in the school year 2018/2019. There were 27 students in the class. The instrument used was an Indonesia text entitled (“Hari yang Sangat Melelahkan”). The result of the study shows that (a) The translation made by tenth grade students of SMAK Saint Carolus Kupang in the school year 2018/2019 is categorized as good translation. In fact, the total number of sentences translated by the 13 students is 130. Out of these sentences, 78 (60,%) of the sentences are classified as good translation, and 52(40%) of the sentences are classified as bad translation. (b) The difficulties faced by the tenth grade students of SMAK Saint Carolus Kupang are grammar, and vocabular. In grammatical aspect they used inappropriate tenses, and in vocabulary aspect they could not choose the word correctly, so it can influence the meaning of the sentence. Based on the result of the study, the writer suggests the following. (1) For the English teacher, they should give more emphases in teaching the English vocabulary and grammar so the students are expected to memorize those English words which are related to the study. Besides, the teacher should give more exercises to the students in translating a text at least one topic every meeting so they are accustomed to it. (2) For the students, they are expected to enrich themselves concerning knowledge of English by translating the English texts given by the teachers or other sources both written in English and Indonesian.
