Abstract

This study is entitled “A Study on Translation Ability of Narrative Text from Indonesian into English by the eleventh grade of SMAK Sint Carolus Kupang in the school year 2018/2019. The study was conducted to answer the following questions. (1) Is the translation of narrative text from Bahasa Indonesia into English of the eleventh grade students of SMAK Sint Carolus Kupang in the school year 2018/2019 good or bad? (2) What are the difficulties faced by the tenth grade students of SMAK Saint Carolus Kupang in doing translation of the narrative text from Indonesian language into English? The objectives of the study are (1) To know whether the translation of the eleventh grade students of SMAK Saint Carolus Kupang in the school year 2018/2019 is good or bad.(2) To find out difficulties faced by the tenth grade students of SMAK Saint Carolus Kupang in the school year 2018/2019 in doing translation. The method applied in this study was descriptive Method. The subject of the study was the eleventh grade students of SMAK Saint Carolus Kupang in the school year 2018/2019. There were 30 students in this class and the writer took 20 students as the sample. This was done purposively; the 20 students were the ones who did all the translation, while others did not do it throughly. The instrument used was a translation task where the students were asked to translate an Indonesian text entitled Kelinci yang Cerdik into English. The writer used the topic because the text was interesting, entertaing and very familiar. The result of the study shows that (1) The translation made by tenth grade students of SMAK Saint Carolus Kupang in the school year 2018/2019is categorized as bad translation. In fact, the total number of sentences translated by the 20students is 200. Out of these sentences, 88(44%) of the sentences are classified as good translation, and 112(56%) of the sentences are classified as bad translation. (2) The difficulties faced by the tenth grade students of SMAK Saint Carolus Kupang are grammar, vocabulary, and the content. In grammatical aspect they used inappropriate tenses, modals and in vocabulary aspect they could not choose the word correctly, so it can influence the meaning of the sentence. Based on the result of the study, the writer suggests the following.(1) For the English teacher, they should give more emphases in teaching the English vocabulary and grammar so that the students are expected to memorize those English words which are related to the study. Besides, the teacher should give more exercises to the students in translating a text at least one topic every meeting so they are accustomed to it. (2) For the students, they are expected to enrich themselves concerning knowledge of English by translating the English texts given by the teachers or other sources both written in English and Indonesian.
