Abstract
This study is entitled A Study on the Ability in translating Indonesian Fable Story into English at the Eleventh Grade Students of SMAK Sint Carolus Kupang in Academic Year 2017/2018.This study was conducted to answer the following questions:(1) Are the translations made by the eleventh grade students of SMAK Sint Carolus Kupang in the school year 2017/2018 good or bad? (2) What are the areas of difficulties in translating a fable story from Indonesian Language into English encountered by the eleventh grade students of SMAK Sint Carolus kupang in the school year 2017/2018? The objectives of the study are as follows: (1) To find out whether the translation made by the eleventh grade students SMAK Sint Carolus Kupang in the school year 2017/2018 good or bad? (2)To know the areas of difficulties in translating a fable story from Indonesian into English by the eleventh grade stduents of SMAK Sint Carolus Kupang in the school year 2017/2018. The writer used descriptive method to describe student’s translations. The subject of this study was the eleventh grade students of SMAK Sint Carolus Kupang in the school year 2017/2018. Especially there were 20 students as the subject. In collecting data,the writer gave a test in form of the text that the writer prepared. The text consisted of 19 sentences written in indonesia language and should be translated by the students into English. The text was entitled “Serigala Dan Bangau.’’ The result of this study shows that from the total of 380 sentences produced by the students only 189 (49.73%) are good sentences and the followed 211 (55.52%) are bad. So, the conclusions of this study are : (1) the students tranlation was classificedas bad. (2) the difficulties faced by the students were lack of grammatical structure of Englishy knowledge. The students commited many grammatical mistakes regarding missing vocabulary, wrong world order and incomplete sentence. The wrong use of the grammatical aspect distorted the original meaning of the content. Therefore, the writer would like to offer some suggestions as follow: (1) the English teacher of the eleventh grade students of SMAK Sint Carolus Kupang needs to pay attention to the grammaticalsuch as the correct word order in a sentence, incomplete sentence and less of word (2) the students needs to pay attention to the grammatical aspect and the world choice, such as the correct world order in a sentence and learn more the English grammar.
