Abstract
This study is entitled: “A Study On Reading Comprehension Ability of the Eight Grade Students of SMP St.Theresia Kupang in the School Year 2018/2019”.It was conducted to answer the following questions: (1) Are the eighth grade students of SMP St.Theresia Kupang able to understand the text they read?, (2) What is the ability level of the eighth grade students of SMP St.Theresia Kupang in understanding the text they read?.The study is done for the following objectives: (1) To find out whether or not the eighth grade students of SMP St.Theresia Kupang are able to comprehend the reading text, (2) To find out the ability level of the eighth grade students of SMP St.Theresia Kupang in comprehending the reading text. To answer the questions mentioned above, the writer used descriptive survey method. The aim of this method is to give or explain a situation which is observed while this research was done. The subject of this study was the eighth grade students of SMP St.Theresia Kupang. The total number of eight grade students of SMP St.Theresia Kupang was 205 students from class A until H. The writer chose class C as a research class based on English teacher recommendation. They were 27 students and the writer took all of them as subject of this study. In collecting data the writer used “Test” as instrument. It consisted of 3 reading texts entitled (1) Peter (followed 10 questions) , (2) My Lovely House (followed 10 questions) , (3) Not For Jazz (followed 5 questions). The results of the study shows that the eighth grade students, especially class C of SMP St.Theresia Kupang in the school year 2018/2019 were able to comprehend reading text. Their level of ability is “Good” (73%). The grade is 7.3. Even though their level of ability is good, there are still some difficulties faced by the students. They answered the questions incorrectly. For example test 1 number 1 the students answer is C while in the key answer is B. Therefore, the writer suggests that the English teacher of SMP St.Theresia Kupang should give more practices to the students in English reading text. Particularly practice on finding the main idea of the text for example on text 2 number 5 and 8 and also the teacher should help them to master grammar and vocabulary to help them to comprehend reading text the teacher should help them to master grammar and vocabulary to help them to comprehend the reading texts.
