Abstract

This study was conducted to answer the following questions: (1) What are kinds ofgrammatical errors committed by the eight grade students of SMPN 10 Kota Kupang in school year 2018/2019? (2) What is the most common error made by the eight grade students of SMPN 10 Kota Kupang in school year 2018/2019? Based on the problems stated above the objectives of this study were as follows: (1) To find out kinds of grammatical errors committed by eight grade students of SMPN 10 Kota Kupang in school year 2018/2019. (2) To find out the most common error made by the eight grade students of SMPN 10 Kota Kupang in school year 2018/2019. The subjects of this study were the eighth grade students of SMPN 10 Kota Kupang, especially students ofclass F. In class F there were 21 students who participated in this research. The method applied in this study was descriptive method and the instrument used was writing recount text and the students were asked to choose one topic out of two:” My Last Holiday, My Last Birthday Party”. The writer used surface strategy taxonomy to analyze the students’ errors.(1)After analyzing the data, the writer found the following facts. The total error is 82. Error on omission is 25 (30,48%). Error on addition is 23 (28,04%). Error on misformation is 21 (25,60%) and error on misordering is 13 (15,83%).(2) The most common error encounted by the Eighth Grade Students of SMPN 10 Kota Kupang was omission(30,48%).The suggestions are as follow: (1)The teacher is recommended to teach and give more practice on grammar especiallypast tense and writing recount text. (2)The students are recommended to study more about the grammar of English, especially past tense and writing recount text.
