Abstract

This study is entitled “The Expression of Request in Klon Language in Bukit Mas Village, Pantar District, Alor Regency”. The research problems of this study are the following, (1) What are the types and strategies of expressing Request in Klon Language? (2) What are the Grammatical Structures of Expression of Request in Klon Language? (3) What should be implemented and should be avoided in expressing Request in Klon Language? This study is based on the theory from Trosborg 1995, with several additions and modifications. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method. Participants in this study are native speakers of the Klon language. The total numbers of participants are 20 people, 10 males and 10 females. This research was conducted in Bukit Mas Village, Pantar District, Alor Regency. The research took two weeks, in September 2022. The instrument that used in this study was Discourse Completion Task (DCT) in the form of questionnaires which consisted of 24 questions. The result shows that Types and strategies of expressing requests based on the theory stated by Trosborg, are all in Klon Language. However, there are several strategies in the Klon language that are very similar. Strategies that have similarities are the strategy of statement of speaker's wishes and desire, and statement of speaker's need and request. There are grammatical differences between Klon Language and English in expressing requests. Furthermore, in Klon Language, the object is placed before the verb, and the verb is placed at the end of the sentence.
