Abstract

The study was conducted to answer the following question. (1) Is the translation done by the Eleventh Grade Students of SMAK Lamaholot Witihama in the School Year 2018/2019 good or bad? (2) What are the difficulties faced by the Eleventh Grade Students of SMAK Lamaholot Witihama in the school year 2018/2019 in translating a text from Bahasa Indonesia into English? The objectives of the study are as follows (1) To find how the translation done by the Eleventh Grade Students ofSMAK Lamaholot Witihama in the School year 2018/2019. (2) To find out the difficulties faced by the Eleventh Grade Students of SMAK Lamaholot Witihama in the school year 2018/2019 in translating a text fom Bahasa Indonesia in to English. The method applied was narrative method.The subject of the study was Eleventh Grade Students of SMAK Lamaholot Witihama in the school year 2018/2019.There were 12 students in this class. The instrument was an Indonesia text about Danau Toba. The result of the study showed that (a) the translation made by Eleventh Grade Students of SMAK Lamaholot Witihama in the school year 2018/2019 is categorized as good translation. In fact the total number of the sentences translate by twelve students are 396 sentences. Out of sentences, 348 (80%) of the sentences are classified as good translation and 48(20%) are classified as bad translation. (b) the difficulties faced by the Eleventh Grade Students of SMAK Lamaholot Witihama are grammar and vocabulary. In grammatical aspect, they use inappropriate tenses,modal, personal pronouns and vocabulary aspect, they could not choose the word correctly, so it can influence the meaning of the sentences. Based on the result of the study, the writer suggests (1) For the English teacher, they should give more emphases in teaching the English vocabulary and grammar so the students are expected to memorize those English word which are related to the study. Besides, the teacher should give more to the student in translating a text at least one topic every day so they are accustomed to it. (2) Fo the students, they are expected to enrich themselves concerning knowledge of English by translating the English text given by the teacher or other source both written in English and Indonesian.
