Abstract
This study is entitled "A Study of Code-Switching Used by English Teacher in Classroom Teaching". This study is conducted to attain the following objectives: 1) To find out the types of code-switching used by English teacher in classroom teaching, 2) To find out the functions of code-switching used by English teacher in classroom teaching. This type of research is qualitative. The subject of the study is an English teacher who teaches in Grade 11 at St. Familia Catholic High School Kupang. The research data were collected through class observation, recording and interview with the teacher. The study uncovers three types of code switching i.e.: tag switching, inter-sentential, code-switching and intra-sentential code-switching. Of the three types, intra-sentential code-switching was the most dominantly used by the teacher. Besides, the study also found functions of code-switching used by teacher in classroom teaching namely repetition, explanation, asking, and translation. The most dominant function of code-switching used by the teacher was translation.
