Abstract
This thesis entitled “A STUDY OF READING COMPREHNSION ABILITY OF THE EIGHTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMPN 1O KUPANG IN THE SCHOOL YEAR 2018/2019” It was conducted to answer the following questions: (1) what is the level of reading comprehension ability of the eighth grade students of SMPN 10 Kupang? (2) what are the difficulties encountered by students in their attempt to comprehend narative text that they read?. Based on the problems stated above, the objective of the study are as follows: (1) to find out students reading ability level of the eighth grade students of SMPN 10 Kupang in school year 2018/2019, (2) To identify the difficulties encuontered by students in reading narative texts in English. The total number of the eighth grade of SMPN 10 Kupang was 30 students. The subjects of this study are 20 students of the eighth grade students of SMPN 10 Kupang. The method applied in this study was descrptive method and in collecting data the writer used reading comprehension test. Based on the data analysis, there was a student (5%) who was in excellent level, 3 students (15%) who were in very good level, 5 students (25%) who were in good level, 8 students (40%) who were in fairly good level, 3 students (15%) who were in average level,. There were no students in below average level, poor level, bad level, very bad level. And the ability of the eighth grade students of SMPN 10 Kupang in school year 2018/2019 is good. Based on the result of analysis the writer would like to ofer some suggestions, even though the result has showed that the students reading comprehension ability is at good level (7,7).
