Abstract

A mixed-ensemble is a musical group performance using more than one type of musical instruments. In learning ensemble music, students are required to be able to play every musical instrument such as: Guitar, Keyboard, Kahon, Bass Guitar and other musical instruments. The research questions are a) How to improve the learning process of playing Ie Bele Wea song in mixed-ensemble instrumental music for grade XIth strudents of SMAN 5 Kupang; and b) How effective is the Drill method on improving the learning process. The aim of this research is to understand and to describe the process of improving the playing of mixed ensemble music on the Ie Bele Wea song. The research was conducted in a qualitative approach with the field action method. To obtain data the researcher used library study techniques, field studies, and documentation. The results of the research showed that the learning process was carried out through the following steps: the initial stage which included the recruitment of students to play in the ensemble, the explanation of the aims and objectives of the research, The main stage which included the introduction of the learning materials, dividing students into the parts based on the instruments, skill practicing, playing together on the arrangement of Ie Bele Wea, improving the quality of ensemble playing. The final stage was rehearsing for the performance and finally performing the song Ie Bele Wea which was documented by the researcher. Based on the research results above, it can be concluded that the application of the drill method in improving the learning of playing mixed ensemble music was successful and quite effective in improving the skills of SMA Negeri 5 Kupang students class XI.
