Abstract

The research problems are; (1) Are the tenth grade students of SMK Kencana Sakti Kupang able to use English puns? and (2) What is the ability level of the tenth grade students of SMK Kencana Sakti Kupang in using English puns”?. The aims of this study are; (1) To know whether the tenth grade students of SMK Kencana Sakti Kupang are able to use English puns and (2) To know ability level of tenth the grade students of SMK Kencana Sakti Kupang in using English puns in the school year 2018/2019. The method used was Descriptive study and the instrument used in this study was test. The writer used qualitativequantitative analysis to analyze the data. Based on the findings and discussions, Students’ ability was presented based on the range of the score. It was discussed from the highest score to the lowest score ability. The results of the study showed that, there was 1 (3.33%) student got 65 or answered 65% correctly and 4 (13.33%) students got 60 or answered 60% correctly. While 1 (3.33%) student got 55 or answer 55% correctly, 4 (13.33%) students got 50 or answered 50% correctly then 6 (20%) students got 45 or answered 45% correctly and 7 (23.33%) students got 40 or answered 40% correctly. Therefore, 3 (10 %) students got 35 or answered 35% correctly, 3 (10%) students got 30 or answered 30% correctly,finally there was 1 (3.33%) student got 25 or answered 25% correctly. So the total of students’ level ability was 44.33. Moreover, the students’ ability in using English puns based on each kind of English puns, they were; Soundalike Puns that consisted of five questions where the average students got 39.33, Lookalike Puns which consisted of seven questions where the average students got 48.09. While Close Sounding Puns consisted of three questions where the average students got 27.77. Finally Texting Puns that consisted of 5 questions where the average students got 56. The average of the total students’ ability in using English puns was 44.33. Moreover, students’ level ability in using English puns were; 5 (16.66%) students got 65 and 60 or average, 5 (16.66%) students got 55 and 50 or below average,13 (43.33%) students got 45 and 40 or poor, while 6 (20%) students got 35 and 30 or very poor and 1 (3.33%) students got 25 or bad. Finally, the total of students’ level ability was 44.33 or poor. Therefore it concluded that the students are poor in using English puns. So the writer suggested that the English teachers should introduce or use English puns to the students as the way to make Englsih be fun, comfortable and joyful to be studied by the students.
