Abstract
This study aims to describe mathematical problem solving ability of VIIB students in SMPK St. Yosep Kupang reviewing Van Hiele geometry thinking level. This research is a descriptive research with a qualitative approach. A total of thirty two students were tested using Van Hiele Geometry Test (VHGT) in order to choose two students to become subjects in this research. Sampling technique used in this research was purposive. Both of the students who had selected would beinterviewed and given problem solving tasks to get to know their mathematical problem solving ability. The results showed that from thirty two students who were tested using VHGT, only ten students had reached level 0 (visualization level) and the rest of the students only reached pre level 0.According to Polya’s mathematical problem solving steps, student belong to level 0 could understand the problems but could not devise problem solving plans, implement problem solving plans, as well as verify the results. Another finding show that student categorized in pre level 0 also could only understand the problems but could not devise problem solving steps, implement them, and verify the results.
