Abstract

This research aims to describe the mathematical literacy of state junior high school students in Kupang city, East Nusa Tenggara province. It was done not only due to the low achievement of Indonesian 15-year-old students in PISA but also because there are no researches which had been done before to map the mathematical literacy of students in Kupang city. This research is classified as a survey research with a descriptive-quantitative characteristic. This research used two-stage cluster randomized sampling to choose six state junior high schools representing six subdistricts around Kupang city. A total of 377 ninth grade students spreading in those schools were selected to become respondents of this survey. The students were assessed using fifteen problems adopted from PISA 2012 and some development researches with a product of mathematical literacy problems so that those items were highly reliable to measure students mathematical literacy. The data were analyzed with a combination of descriptive statistics and the usage of Mamdani’s fuzzy inference method in order to describe and categorize the level of students mathematical literacy. The results show that the mathematical literacy of state junior high school students in Kupang city generally was in a low category. Reviewing content domain, mathematical literacy of students for quantity and algebra was classified as a low category, while for geometry as well as uncertainty and data was in the very low category. Reviewing process domain, mathematical literacy of students for formulating situations mathematically domain as well as employing concepts, facts, procedures, and reasoning domain was in a low category, although interpreting, applying, and evaluating mathematical outcomes domain was classified as a very low category.
