Abstract
“Rayner Oktavianus Bere, 2024. The Role of Leaders in Matamusan Traditional Rituals in the Matay Community, Central Malaka District, Malacca Regency.” Talking about Matamusan is closely related to the marriage pattern adopted by the people of Malacca with the "Wesei Wehali" culture, where the Matay people live, namely a matrilineal marriage pattern. Based on the meaning of the word, "matamusan" consists of two words, namely matan and musan. The word matan has the same meaning as eye, while musan means seed. So, literally, matamusan means apple of the eye. In the issue of selecting a replacement guardian (Matamusan), the role of the traditional figures above played a role in resolving it. The aim of this research is to find out the role of leaders in Matamusan traditional rituals in the Matay community, Central Malaka District, Malacca Regency; to find out the process of implementing Matamusan customs in the Matay community, Central Malaka District, Malacca Regency and to find out the relationship between Matamusan traditional rituals in the Matay community and public administration. This research uses qualitative research, based on the results of interviews and direct observations in the field and uses data collection techniques carried out along with interviews with traditional leaders. Data analysis techniques include data reduction, data presentation and concept discovery and drawing conclusions. The role of the leader is as an intermediary, acting as a shepherd and as a supervisor of people, as a leader of ritual ceremonies, the role of the leader is taking care of traditional ceremonies, while maintaining the welfare of the community, providing advice to the community, solving problems that occur in the community. The implementation of Matamusan customs in the traditions of the Malacca Matay people in particular must go through several stages, namely, (1) Preparation stage (tur motu), (2) Implementation stage, namely wearing a cloth around the waist and a scarf around the neck of the Matamusan child (tais kabala, tais hafu' ut) and (3) The final stage is that the Matamusan child will officially move to the father's family clan. The relationship between Public Administration Science and Matamusan is to strengthen the relationship between the two families for life (umua rua la bele kotumalu) and at the same time as a sign of respect for the husband and the existence of the Matamusan custom in the Matay community tradition to maintain ties of brotherhood or kinship and to maintain the close relationship between the two families extending to subsequent generations.
