Abstract

It was conducted to answer the following questions; (1) Are the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Kupang able to write a descriptive text or not?(2) What is the ability level of the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 1 Kupang in writing descriptive text? The method used in this study was descriptive method. The aim of this method was to give or explain a situation which was observed while this research was being done. The subject of this study was the tenth grade students of SMAN 1 Kupang (class X IPA 4). The total number of class X IPA 4 was 38 students but the writer only chose 25 students randomly as the sample of this study. The instrument used in this study was writingtest.The collected data were analyzed on three aspects of writing, namely; grammar, vocabulary, and form. The result of this study indicated that the tenth grade students of SMAN 1 Kupang are able to write descriptive text with the level of ability that was classified as “AVERAGE” (7, 52). Based on the result of study, there was not any student who got highest score 16-18 (Excellent), and there was not any student who got very good score 13-15, 2 students who got 10-11 (50%) which is classified as good, 15 students who got 7-9 (10%) which is classified as average, 8 students who got 4-6 (10%) which is classified as bellow average. There was not any student who got score 3-0 (bad). Based on the result above the writer suggests the following: (1) The students at the researched school should study more in grammar and vocabulary so that they will be able to write descriptive text correctly (2) the English teacher is also suggested to pay more attention to the teaching of grammar and vocabulary so the student can write descriptive writing grammatically and correctly.
