Abstract

The study was conducted to answer the following questions: (1) Are the eighthgrade students of SMPN 10 Kupang in the school year 2018/2019 able to comprehend the text they read? (2) What is the ability level of the eighth-grade students of SMPN 10 Kupang in the school year 2018/2019 in comprehending the text they read? The objectives of the study are (1) to find out whether or not the eighth grade students of SMPN 10 Kupang in the school year 2018/2019 are able to comprehend the text they read (2) to find out the ability level of the eighth grade students of SMPN 10 Kupang in the school year 2018/2019 in comprehending the text they read. To answer the questions mentioned above the writer used the descriptive qualitative method. The aim of this method is to give or explain the data obtained when this research was conducted. The subject of this study was the eighth-grade students of SMPN 10 Kupang. The total number of the eighth-grade students of SMPN 10 Kupang was 343 students from class A until K. The writer chose class A as a research class based on the writer informal observation and The English teacher recommendation. They were 30 students in this class and the writer took all of them as the subject of this study. In collecting the data the writer used “ Test” as the instrument. It consisted of 4 reading texts (1) Dion, (2) My Pet, (3) Paris, (4) My best friend. The result of the study shows that (a) The eighth-grade students of SMPN 10 Kupang in the school year 2018/2019 were able to comprehend the text they read. (b) Their ability level is “Fairly good” with a total score of 66% or 6.6 as the grade. Based on the result of the study, the writer suggests the following. (1) For the English teacher, in order to improve the students’ ability in reading comprehension, the English teacher should give the students more explanations about the English text, and given more exercises in form of multiple choice test. (2) For the students, the result of the students' ability is fairly good thus the students should pay more attention and do more exercises about the English text. The practices can be done in the classroom or at home by doing homework so their level of ability can be better.
