Abstract

This article intends to identify and to describe the cultural imagery differ_ ences between English speakers and Indonesian spealcers expressed in some functional expressions. The information conveyed-in this writing is useful for both the teachers of Engrish and Indonesian and the students studying Eng- lish and Indonesian, including translators. Some relsted studies inspired the writer in choosing the topic and writing this article. To limit and direct the discussion, a number of basic concepti are exprained. To analyze the dnta, thg colceqt of language function of Engrish ind Indonesian aid the theory of c.ultural linguistics are applied. The-data were obtainia yro* the bool* and common l*towledge of the writer and confirmed with thtise competent in functional expressions of English and those of Indonesian. rhe data were analyed through some steps. There found some dffirences between func- tionol expressions of Engrish and Indonesian for eiprnsrrng the same"func_ tion or purpose. some suggestions are addreised ti the teichers of Eiglish and Indonesion, the students studying English and Indonesiin, and transla_ tors to poy ottentions to tltese dffirent functional expressions. rhe cultural imagery found ean be modified to be the vahrcs of rtfe af peipre of Indone- sian.
