Abstract

The aim of this research was to examine the characteristic of purple sweet potato tuber pigment (PSPTP) and turmeric rhizome pigment (TRP) in test solution and used as acid-base titration indicators compared to the phenolphthalein (PP). TRP is extracted with ethanol solvent while PUUJU is extracted with ethanol solvent under acidic conditions. PSPTP and TRP were tested for color change characteristics and used as indicators for HCl-NaOH and CH3COOHNaOH titrations. The research results show that PSPTP is red at pH 1, pink at pH 2-6, purple at pH 7, blue at pH 8- 9, green at pH 10-11 and yellow at pH 12-14. TRP shows a yellow color at pH 1-7, fades brick red at pH 8 and becomes more intense as the pH value of the solution increases.These two pigments were able to show clear color changes at the end point of the titration like the PP. The HCl concentrations obtained in the titration using the PP, PSPTP and TRP were 0.1031 M, 0.1045 M and 0.1025 M respectively, while the CH3COOH concentrations were 0.0876 M, 0.0869 M and 0.0853 respectively. Based on these data, PSPTP and TRP can be used as indicators for HCl-NaOH and CH3COOOH-NaOH titrations in chemistry experiment.
