Abstract

This study was conducted to answer the following questions: (1) Are the eighth grade students of SMPK Sta. Familia Kupang able to use simple past tense in sentences? (2) What is the ability level of the eighth grade students of SMPK Sta. Familia Kupang in using simple past tense in sentenses? The objectives of the study are the following: (1) to find out whether or not the eighth grade the students of SMPK Sta. Familia Kupang are able to use simple past tense in sentences. (2) To find out the level of students ability of the eight grade students of SMPK Sta. Familia Kupang in using simple past tense in sentences. Method used in this study was a descriptive method. The instrument that the writer used for gathering the data was the test. The total respondents were 20 students. The test consisted of fourty (40) test items which were divided into two types namely: 30 test items of multiple choice and 10 test items were fill the blanks test. The result of analysis indicates thatthe eighth grade students of SMPK Sta. Familia Kupang are able in using simple past tense in multiple choice and fill the blanks.The ability level of eighth grade students of SMPK Sta. Familia Kupang was “Average” (66.2). Their level of ability are as follows: Five (25%) students got good level of ability ranging from 7.6 – 8.5. Seven (35%) students got fairly good level of ability ranging from 6.6 – 7.5. Five (25%) students got average level of ability ranging from 5.6 – 6.5. One (5%) student got below average level of ability ranging from 4.6 – 5.5. One student (5%) got poor level of ability ranging from 3.5 – 4.5. One (5%) student got very poor level of ability ranging from 2.6- 3.5. The average ability of students is “Average”(66.2%). The difficulties faced by the students in using simple past tense are the interrogative sentences. Based on the result, the writer would like to suggest: firstly the English teacher should give more attention to students’ vocabulary in using simple past tense especially constructing interrogative in the sentences, or other appropriate techniques or methods. Remedial teaching is necessary in order to make the students understand better interrogative sentences.Secondly students should study more simple past tense and how to answer questions.
