Abstract
The writer interested to conduct this study because based on his experienced when he did a teaching practice in SMP Negeri 10 Kupang, he found that there were many students who did not understand well about writing especially in writing descriptive text. So, that is why he decided to conduct this study. Descriptive Text was very important to learn because the purpose of descriptive text was to describe something like, person, animals, and place. So, mastering descriptive text can support the learners when they want to describe something. This study was conducted to answer the following questions: (1) What are types of errors made by the eighth grade students of SMPN 10 Kupang in the academic year 2019/2020 in writing descriptive text? (2) What is the most common error made by the eighth grade students of SMPN 10 Kupang in the academic year 2019/2020 in writing descriptive text? Based on the problems stated above, the objectives of this study are (1) To find out types of error made by the eighth grade students of SMPN 10 Kupang in writing descriptive text and (2) To figure out the most common error in writing descriptive text committed by the eighth grade students of SMPN 10 Kupang. The subject of this study was 15 students of the eighth grade students of SMPN 10 Kupang. The writer choose those participants because they were diligent, polite and some of them have a good skills in learning English. In collecting the result, the writer used a qualitative descriptive method and the instrument used was a writing task. The students were asked to write descriptive text based on the topic they choose. The taxonomy used by the writer in analyzing the data was surface strategy taxonomy that consists of some categories such as omission, addition, misformation and misordering. The result of the analysis showed that the errors committed by the eighth grade students of SMPN 10 Kupang in the academic year 2019/2020 were omission 88 (52, 07%), addition 9 (5, 32%), misformation 44 (26, 03%) and misordering 28 (16, 56%). The total number of errors was 169. The most common error committed by the students was an omission error. Therefore, the writer would like to give some suggestions for the English teacher and for the students. (1) The English teacher should teach the students more about the use suffix s or es in singular and plural form and the correct way in arranging their sentences. 2. The students should learn and understand the simple present tense and do a lot of practice by reading many examples of descriptive text, and writing a descriptive text individually.
