Abstract

This descriptive qualitative research intends to investigate how the speakers of Manus dialect in Pongbali of East Manggarai Regency encode their relationships. This study was conducted to answer the following questions: (1). What are the kinds of kinship terms in Manus dialect? (2). What are the functions and the meanings of kinship terms in Manus dialect?. To analyze the data,the theory of sociolinguistics especially language in interaction was applied. The data were obtained through an elicitationtask.For the elicitation task, a number of sentences were prepared in written and presented to the informants. This study were conducted to find out kinds, functions and meaning of addressing terms. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative method. The data were collected from three informants. The data were analysed based on kinds, functions and meaning. In this study, the used of term ‘form’ refers to the forms of terms of address used in Manus dialect based on the family relationship/kinship terms, polite address, social status, age and non family terms. The result of this study showed that there are four kinds of addressing terms used in Manus which are identified on basis of family relationship/kinship terms,politeness,age and non family relationship.In relation to politeness, it is used to set the community of Pongbali people to behave politely. Referring to their uses in Manus, the addressing terms used in Manus serve a number of functions covering the politeness markers and the intimacy markers, depending on the parameters of family relationship/ kinship terms,polite terms,age, and non family relationship. The meanings of the terms of address used in Manus are closely related to their functions. Analysis of the functions identifies three principles, namely: (1) politeness, (2) honorifics and (3) intimacy. Those three principles are the embodiment of social meaning in Manus culture. This study suggested that: (1) the experts of linguistics should continue the study to confirm and elaborate the linguistic evidence in encoding relationship of Manus Dialect spoken by people in Pongbali of East Manggarai Regency. (2) The English learners from Manus ethnic group are expected to make use of English as instrument for promoting Manggarai culture especially terms of address in Manus dialect which have been resulted from this research. Moreover, the speakers of Manus dialect must feel proud having local language and to attempt to speak it.
