Abstract

It was conducted to answer the following question (1) Is the use of Snowball Throwing Technique effective in improving speaking ability of the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 5 Kupang in the school year 2017/2018? (2) How is Snowball Throwing technique implemented to improve speaking ability of the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 5 Kupang in the school year 2017/2018? The following objective of the study are (1) To find out if Snowball Throwing technique is effective to improve speaking ability of the eleventh grade students of SMAN 5 Kupang in the school year 2017/2018 in learning English process. (2) To describe how is Snowball Throwing technique implemented to improve speaking ability of the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 5 Kupang in the school year 2017/2018. To answer those question above the writer applied Snowball Throwing Technique to improve students’ speaking ability in narrative text. This study is an classroom action research (CAR) was conducted in two cycle. Each cycle consisted of four stages; planning, action, observation, and reflection. This study was conducted in SMA Negeri 5 Kupang in the school year 2017/2018. The subject of this study was the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 5 Kupang. The total number of the eleventh grade students was 165 distributed in 15 classes. However, in this study the writer chose Class Science 1. They consisted of 32 students. In implementing Snowball Throwing Technique, the writer is implemented in two cycles. In cycle 1, the writer gave the students material of the narrative text and the aspect of speaking. After that, the writer gave the students post test 1 to measure the students’ speaking ability and the writer gave the students motivate if there were some students were still confuse about the aspect of speaking, those are pronunciation, grammar and vocabulary. In cycle two, the writer explained again about the treatment of pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary after that the writer gave the students post test to measure speaking ability. The result of this study shows that the use of Snowball Throwing Technique can improve the speaking ability of the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 5 Kupang in school year 2017/2018. It was shown by the students’ achievement test score in every cycle. There is improvement in cycle 1 to cycle 2, it can be seen from the average of students’ score in cycle 1 is 3,1 intermediate level and in the cycle 2 is 4 as advance level. Based on this result it can be concluded that the use of Snowball Throwing Technique is effective to improve students’ speaking ability in narrative text of the eleventh grade students of SMA Negeri 5 Kupang in the school year 2017/2018. Therefore the English teachers especially those who are teaching at the school where this study was taken place are highly recommended to use Snowball Throwing Technique as one of strategy or technique to teach the students to create active learning and teaching process and encourage the students to speak in xii English. Teachers are also suggested the students especially those were involved in this study, are suggested to use Snowball Throwing Technique as their group learning tool because it is very useful to help them to more active in speaking English; and the writer will be become an educator since this study showed a positive result he decided to continue to use Snowball Throwing Technique with any necessary adjustment in his professional career as a teacher later on and shares it with others especially his future students.
