Abstract
This study was conducted to answer the following questions: (1) Do the eleventh grade students of SMAN 5Kupang in the school year 2017/2018 use the code switching in their conversation? (2) What are the types of code switching that occur in the conversation of the eleventh grade students of SMAN 5 Kupang in the school year 2017/2018 (3) What are the probable reasons for the eleventh grades students of SMAN 5 Kupang in the school year 2017-2018 to switch their English into Indonesian in their conversation? This study has some objectives, namely: (1) To know whether the eleventh grade students of SMAN 5 Kupang in the school year 2017-2018 use the code switching in their conversation or not. (2) To find out the types of code switching that occur in the conversation of the eleventh grade students of SMAN 5 Kupang in the school year 2017-2018 (3) To find out the probable reasons for the eleventh grade students of SMAN 5 kupang in the school year 2017-2018, to switch their English into Indonesian in their conversation. In doing this study, the writer used the descriptive method because it is used to describe the types of code switching which occurred during the students’ conversation and the reasons which made the students switch the code from one language to another. The instrument used in collecting the data was conversation. The subject of this study was the eleventh grade students of SMAN 5 Kupang. (1) The result of the study showed that the eleventh grade students of SMAN 5 Kupang in the school year 2017/2018 performed code switching in their English conversation. (2) There were two types of code switching occurred during the conversation. They were intrasentential switching and intersentential switching. Intrasentential switching happened 9 times in the students’ conversation and intersententential switching happened 3 times in the students’ conversation. (3) The reasons why the students switched their language were , being simpatic about something 6 cases (50%), Interjection (inserting Sentence Fillers or Sentences Conectors ),2 cases ( 16,67) repetition used for clarification 1 cases (8,33%), Because of real lexical Need 3 cases( 25%) Based on the result of this study, the suggestion can be given as follows: The students as the ones who learn English should learned more vocabulary to improve their ability in speaking English. For the future researcher, this study is focused on the code switching which occurs in the conversation between the students in English class. Hopefully the future researcher may do the same study but using the other participants such as a study about the code switching by the English teacher in interacting with the students
