Abstract

This study is entitled ’’A study on dialectological Variations of Lamaholot Language spoken in Adonara. This research intends to investigate the phonological features and the lexical variation among the three subdialects: Nihaone, Lamahala Subdialect and Hinga Subdialect of Adonara Dialect of Lamaholot Language (LL). The result of the study is useful for both the academic world and the practical life of the society, especially the speakers of LL in Adonara District. The study is descriptive qualitative. The data were obtained through elicitation techniques and interview. For the elicitation technique a number of lexicons were prepared in written form to elicit the data from the informants. In the interview, the informants were asked to inform any lexicons and sentences that are different in the three subdialects. The data were analyzed through some steps: listing and translation. Based on the data analysis, it was found, some phonological features and the lexical variation occurs in three subdialects: first, Nihaone Subdialect is marked by some phonological features: the presence of the phonemes /n/, /y/, the absence of the phoneme /g/ at the final position of some words. Second, Lamahala Subdilaect is marked by some phonological features: the presence of the phonemes /j/,/n/ the presence of the phoneme /g/ at the final position of some words. Third, Hinga subdialect is marked by some phonological feature : the presence of phonemes of /t/ /r/ the absence of phonemes /g/ in final position of some words. Meanwhile in the terms of lexical variations, there were significant variation among the three subdialects. In line with the significance and the finding of the study some suggestions are proposed. (1) Other linguistic researchers are suggested to do the research focusing on the aspect of dialectology in other parts of LL speaking areas. (2) in teaching and learning, English as a foreign language, the teacher also pay attention to dialectological variations spoken by people in certain area.
