Abstract
This study is entitled “a Study on the Ability of the Eighth Grade Students of SMPK Santa Familia Kupang in Writing Procedure Text in the School Year 2015/2016”. This study was held to find the answer of two questions. (1) Are the eighth grade students of SMPK santa familia Kupang in the school year 2015/2016 able to write a procedure text? (2) What is the ability level of the the eighth students of SMPK Santa Familia Kupang in writing procedure text? This study focused on grammar, vocabulary and form. The method used in this study was descriptive method. The aim of the method is to explain a situation which is observed while this research done. The subject of this study was the eighth grade students of SMPK Santa Familia Kupang. The total number of the eighth grade students is 80. By using purposive sampling the writer only chose class VIII C consisting of 27 students but the students that joined the class were only 20 students to become the respondents of this study. The instrument used for this research was writing a procedure text. The data gathered and analyzed. The result of this study indicated that the eighth grade students of SMPK Santa Familia Kupang in the academic year 2015/2016 are able to write procedure text. Their level of ability is classified as Above average (11.75). Based on the result of this study, there are no students who got highest score 16-18 (Excellent), 9 students who got 10-12 (45%) which is classified as above average, 9 students who got score 13-15(45%) which is classified as very good,2 students who got score 7-9 (10%) which is classified as below as average, there was no student who got score 4-6 (0%) and 3 (bad). Based on procedure text in general the form is good. Regarding the grammar and vocabulary the writer found that many students still have difficulties with the correct use of grammar, the use of preposition, and the use of appropriate vocabulary. Therefore the writer suggests that the English teacher should motivate the student to make a piece of writing easily and expected to pay attention to the students English especially the students grammar like the use of preposition, appropriate vocabulary and form of the sentences correctly in writing procedure text
