Abstract
This study is entitled:A Study On The Correlation Between Vocabulary Mastery And Reading Comprehension Ability Of The Eighth Grade Students Of SMANegeri1TasifetoTimurIn The School Year 2015 / 2016. This study was conducted in order to answer the following hypothesis: (1). Ho: There is no correlation between the mastery ofvocabularyand reading comprehension ability. (2). H1: there is a correlation between the mastery of vocabulary and reading comprehension ability. The objectives of this study are: (1) Tofind out whether there is or there is not correlation between vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension ability. (2) To find out the degree of correlation between vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension ability. To support this study, the writer used several books that are related to the study. The correlative method was used in this study. The respondents of this study were 21 students, while the instrument used in gathering the data was test. The test consisted of 40 test items, divided into two parts: 20 test items constructed for vocabulary and 20 test items constructed for reading comprehension. The result of data analysis indicated that the vocabulary mastery and reading comprehension of the eleventh grade students of SMANegeri 1 Tasifeto Timur has a correlation. It is proved by their degree of the correlation is classified as low correlation, and the value is 0.3197. It means that Ho is rejected while H1 is accepted. Based on the data analysis, the writer can conclude that there is a correlation between the mastery of vocabulary and reading comprehension and it was found that the students‟ mastery range of vocabulary and reading comprehension is low correlation (0.3197). Some suggestions are offered to the English teacher and the students of the researched school, are as follows: (1) for the teacher:the teacher should give more explanation and exercise on vocabulary x and reading comprehension to the students, especially the diction (the use of proper word on proper context). The teacher should give the reading text to the students and give more explanation to students to understand the reading text given without seeing the vocabulary in the dictionary and let the students try to find the meaning from the context. The students still need more attention on pronouns also especially on the proper use of possessive adjective and possessive pronoun. (2). For the students: For improving the students reading comprehension and vocabulary mastery, the students should try to enrich their vocabulary and grammar by reading. The students should pay more attention to the teacher explanation and do more exercises.
