Abstract
This research is entitled, “Refusal Strategies to Request in Keo Language”. This research aims to answering the question “What are the refusal strategies used by keo Language in declining someone’s request?”. The objective of the study is to find out the strategies used by the speakers of Keo Language in declining someone’s request. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative and the participants are fifteen keo language speakers. The Instrument used was direct interaction or direct communication with the society. Researcher used recorder to record the refusal conversation and then the researcher started to transcribe the data. The data were taken by the conversations of keo language speaker in refusing someone’s request. In analyzing the data, the researcher used refusal strategies theory by Beebe et. al (1990) i.e Direct strategies, Indirect strategies and Adjuncts. The result obtained that Keo Language speaker used Direct strategies as much as nin times, Indirect strategies as much as 28 times and adjuncts were used as much 9 times. It means that the strategy that the most frequently used by the speaker of Keo Language was Indirect Strategy.
