Abstract
This study aims to describe the mathematical problem solving ability of students at Catholic St. Yoseph Naikoten Kupang Junior High School in solving problems on rectangular material. In analyzing the problem-solving ability process, the researcher used problem-solving steps according to Polya, namely: understanding the problem, making a problem-solving plan, implementing a problem-solving plan, and re-examining the results that have been obtained. This research is a descriptive qualitative research. Data collection was done through the provision of mathematical problem solving tests (TPM) and interviews with research subjects. To test the credibility of the data, time triangulation was carried out. Data analysis was carried out in three stages, namely data reduction, data presentation and data inference. The results showed that highability subjects could perform the four stages of the mathematical problemsolving test process, namely the stage of understanding the problem, making a problem-solving plan, implementing a problem-solving plan and re-examining the results. Subjects with moderate abilities can only pass three stages of the mathematical problem solving test process, namely the stage of understanding the problem, making a problem-solving plan, and implementing a problemsolving plan. Meanwhile, low-ability subjects can only pass the stage of understanding the problem and making a problem-solving plan.
