Abstract

This study armed to describe the mathematical problem solving abilities of VIII graders of SMP Negeri Satu Atap Peke in solving problems with the Two Variable Linear Equation System for the Academic Year 2021/2022. The subjects in this study were 3 students of class VIII SMP Negeri Satu Atap Peke. The determination of the study subject was obtained through discussion with the mathematics teacher so that three students were found as subjects in this study. The three subjects were taken one person each from each level of high, medium and low mathematical ability. Data was collected through problem solving tests and interviews. The results of this study indicate that students with high mathematical abilities can perform the four stages of the problem-solving test process according to Polya, namely the stage of understanding the problem, making a problem-solving plan, implementing a problem-solving plan and re-examining the results. Students with moderate mathematical ability can pass the four stages of the problem solving test process, namely understanding the problem, making a problem-solving plan, implementing a problem-solving plan, and checking again. Students with moderate mathematical ability in solving the given problem have not been able to solve problem solving problems based on problem solving steps properly so that students are said to have not been able to meet problem solving indicators according to Polya. Meanwhile, students with low mathematical abilities can only pass the stage of understanding the problem and implementing a problem-solving plan.
