Abstract

The Makawera ceremony is a cultural heritage of the Sumbanese which is still preserved until now. There is a problem that exist in this writing that is the meaning in the Saiso Balitonga’s song which is sung for two or three nights before the Makawera ceremony. The purpose of this research is to find out the meaning of the lyric in the Saiso Balitonga’s song. The method used in this research is an action research study of literature. In collecting data, the writer uses two techniques, consist of literature studies and field studies. Literature studies relate to information that can be accessed by books, notes which is related to the problems studied, meanwhile field studies relate to data obtained by documentation and interviews. Makawera ceremony is a traditional rituals was done for three reasons, consist of, first the grave of the deceased when he was buried was still in the form of an earthen grave or an emergency grave. Second, there are vows or promises that are requested by people who are still alive and third is a messege from the deceased to relatives to pull the grave stone ( stone Trimbeng) or concreate stone. The Makawera ceremony is performance in several steps. Before the rituals of the Makawera ceremony, The Rato will sing The Saiso Balitonga’s song as a medium of communication with Rame’s ancestors. The result of the study show that the singing of Saiso balitonga’s in the Makawera ceremony has a meaning as a form of respect, notification and request for permission to the ancestors
