Abstract
This study is entitled “CORRELATION BETWEEN VOCABULARY MASTERY AND TRANSLATION ABILITY FROM INDONESIAN TEXT INTO ENGLISH OF THE SEVENTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMPN 1 KUPANG IN THE ACADEMIC YEAR 2015/2016”. It was conducted to answer the following hypothesis: (1) H: There is a correlation between vocabulary mastery and Indonesian-English translation ability. (2) H: There is no correlation between vocabulary mastery and Indonesian-English translation ability. The objectives of this study are: (1) To identify the vocabulary mastery and translation ability of the seventh grade students of SMPN 1 Kupang. (2) To identify the correlation between vocabulary mastery and translation ability of the seventh grade students of SMPN 1 Kupang. The research method in this study is correlative design with quantitative approach. The subject of this study consists of 30 students of the seventh grade students especially in class A. The research instruments used are in the form of vocabulary test and translation test. The data is analyzed by using Pearson Product Moment correlation and SPSS 16.0 program. The result of this research showed that, the correlation value (r) between the vocabulary mastery and Indonesian-English translation ability is 0.510. Based on the table of interpretation by Best, the score lies in the interval 0.40-0.60. It means that the correlation of this research was moderate. Therefore, “there is a correlation between vocabulary mastery and Indonesian-English translation ability of the seventh grade students of SMPN 1 Kupang in the academic year 2015/2016”. The significance correlation was found out by comparing the “ and “. In fact, the (0.510) was higher than the (0.478) in the significant level 1% for df 28. Since the value of was higher than, the correlation was significant. This result took a conclusion that the Alternative Hypothesis ( ) was accepted and Null Hypothesis ( ) was rejected. Based on the result of the study, there are some suggestions are offered for the English teachers and the students of the researched school, are as follows: (1) for the teachers: the teachers should give more attention and motivate the students to upgrade their vocabulary. The teacher should give the input about the students’ work, so they would know their weakness in translating text. Considering this view, hopefully that the students as translator would translate more appropriately. (2) for the students: the researcher advised the students that they should have good mastery in vocabulary before doing translation works. The students can practice with other kinds of text to increase their translation especially Indonesian into English.
