Abstract

Kupang is the capital of East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) province. As the largest city in East Nusa Tenggara, Kupang is the main reference in various service developments such as industry, economics, government, health, and education. The progress of the development of a city is certainly inseparable from the progress of its human resources, therefore development in the field of education has a very central role in the development of a city. The progress of development in the field of education can be seen from the quality of universities. One of the universities that is in the process of growth in Kupang City is Widya Mandira Catholic University. Widya Mandira Catholic University (UNWIRA) at the beginning of its establishment Unwira only consisted of 3 Faculties, namely the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, the Faculty of Engineering based in Kupang and the Faculty of Catholic Philosophy and Theology based in Ledalero Maumere-Flores. This Catholic Faculty of Philosophy and Theology then stood alone in 1983 and in the same year the Faculty of Economics was also established. Since its inception and until now the Community of the Faculty of Economics Unwira in undergoing the lecture process still does not have its own buildings and facilities, so it is still joined by other Faculties. This certainly makes the entire Community of the Faculty of Economics Unwira difficult and feel uncomfortable in carrying out activities both lectures, seminars and other related activities. This situation is also caused by the current location, namely Jl. Jend. Achmad Yani No. 50-52 Merdeka, has a narrow and dense land size so that it is difficult to develop the area. In addition, Economics is one of the fields of science that is in great demand because it is closely related to daily life, so it is not surprising that many students want to pursue this field of science. The Faculty of Economics building is also expected to be able to adjust to the current and future circumstances, so the approach used in planning and design is the Contemporary Architecture approach. In the book Indonesian Architecture Now, by Imelda Akmal, depicted contemporary architectural works found in Indonesia. This work was built in the last decade and adequately illustrates the trend of domestic architecture. The trend that has developed in the past decade has been dominated by the influence of modern architecture that has similar expressions with modern architectural works from the western hemisphere in the 60s. The works of contemporary Indonesian architecture have similarities with the works of Mies van de Rohe, Wassily by Marcel Breuer or the B306 chaise-lounge chair by Le Corbusier and the lounge chair by Charles Eames.Contemporary architecture has been recognized as one of the approaches in designing internationally so that many experts have expressed opinions regarding the definition of contemporary architecture. Contemporary Architecture presents a dynamic and expressive form of building appearance (exterior and interior), which is expected to affect the psychology of building users so that they do not feel bored or saturated. This can be a trigger to foster the spirit of learning and creativity for students, lecturers and the academy community. In addition to the shape and appearance, the Contemporary Architecture approach also presents building materials that are more in line with the development of the times and technological advances, this is to support the activities of the entire academy community. In the approach of Contemporary Architecture can also be possible to present another level in the sense that, Contemporary Architecture is also a combination of several architectural styles.
